2020 Texas Registered Sanitarian Statistics

As we approach the end of 2020 (thank goodness!), TexasPHS would like to provide an update on the state of the Registered Sanitarian (RS) license in Texas.

In the past, the staff at TexasPHS has written numerous articles on the Texas Professional RS license, including the importance of the environmental health profession in Texas and also on the revised Texas RS exam.

Here are some intriguing statistics:

TOTAL TEXAS HEALTH INSPECTORS:

As of September 2020, there were a total of 1,275 licensed Registered Sanitarians in the State of Texas. Based on an approximate Texas population of 30,000,000 — that’s one licensed health inspector for every 23,500 Texans!

In the past two years, the number of Registered Sanitarians actually dropped by 9 persons.

RS EXAM PASS RATES:

Additionally, as you can see from the chart above, the Texas RS Exam pass rate skyrocketed in 2020. In fiscal years 2018 and 2019, the pass rate for first-time exam candidates averaged 62.0%. In fiscal year 2020, however, the pass rate for the Texas RS exam jumped nearly 26 percentage points to 87.7%.

The exam must be really easy or the state of Texas is gaining some really talented Professional Registered Sanitarians.
