Amazon Fresh Drops the Ball on Food Safety during Coronavirus Pandemic

Uber-convenient online grocery delivery services such as Amazon Fresh have increased exponentially in 2020.

Amazon Fresh has grown so fast in fact, that basic food safety standards are being abused at an alarmingly fast clip.

The coronavirus pandemic has only exacerbated this situation.

To make matters worse, regulatory agencies such as the Texas Department of State Health Services as well as county and local health departments can’t keep up with the industry’s innovation.

Amazon Fresh food warehouses are simply not being inspected at the frequency required by the Texas Food Establishment Rules and the FDA Food Code.

Several North Texas Amazon Fresh customers have reached out to TexasPHS for help. Our readers have sent us numerous pictures of critical health hazards associated with Amazon Fresh deliveries – raw eggs stored on top of freshly cut fruit, washed and ready-to-eat salad stored below raw meats, broken eggs oozing onto fresh cantaloupe.

This is unacceptable and has got to change immediately, Amazon.

Especially as Bezos seeks to hire an additional 100,000 workers in the U.S. to meet demand.

In the sprawling Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, many of the Amazon Fresh deliveries originate from an Amazon Prime Now LLC food warehouse located at 6627 Maple Avenue, Dallas, Texas 75235

TexasPHS filed an open records request with the City of Dallas to obtain food safety inspection reports for this warehouse.

TexasPHS discovered that this particular Amazon Fresh facility was last inspected on October 7, 2018. Here is the report:

As millions of Texans turn to Amazon Fresh during the coronavirus pandemic – proper personal hygiene, adequate sanitation, protection from cross contamination during storage and delivery, proper cold holding temperatures, and a highly trained food worker staff should be front and center on the company’s mind.

Texas deserves better.
